Antenatal care: why early contact matters

Start early

Antenatal care is more than testing: it offers space to discuss health, needs and preferences. Contact a maternity professional when you learn you are pregnant. Share medical history, previous pregnancies, medicines and supplements. Do not stop long-term medicines independently; they may need a safe review rather than abrupt withdrawal.

What visits may cover

Care can include blood pressure checks, blood and urine tests, assessment of fetal growth and appropriate imaging. Ask about each test's purpose, limitations and choices before consenting. Discuss food, activity, locally recommended vaccinations and supplements, emotional wellbeing and support at home. WHO recommends at least eight care contacts for uncomplicated pregnancy, beginning within the first twelve weeks. Individual circumstances may require additional visits within the local care plan.

Do not wait for an appointment

Seek urgent help for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headache with visual disturbance or sudden swelling, or suspected fluid leakage. Reduced fetal movement after an established pattern needs immediate contact with the maternity unit, not waiting until the next day. Chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting requires emergency attention. Ask for an out-of-hours contact number, and discuss birth planning and access to care as pregnancy progresses.

Safety note

This is general educational information, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan, and it does not replace advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Needs vary; seek urgent care for warning signs rather than delaying for online advice.
