Endometriosis and period pain

Understanding symptoms

Endometriosis involves tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb. Severe period pain, pelvic or sexual pain and bowel or bladder symptoms may occur. Pain that disrupts education or work is not something you should simply endure without seeking help.

Assessment and options

A diary of periods, pain and bleeding helps explain symptoms. Assessment may include examination and imaging; normal imaging does not exclude every case. Pain relief, hormonal treatments or surgery are chosen according to symptoms and pregnancy goals. Sudden severe pelvic pain or fainting, especially if pregnancy is possible, needs urgent assessment for other causes.

Making informed decisions

Ask about the expected benefits and possible harms of each option, including what happens if you wait. Test results need interpretation alongside your history and examination, not in isolation. If instructions are unclear, request a plain-language explanation and repeat the plan back in your own words. Keep a copy of the agreed follow-up steps.

Preparing for a consultation

Write down when symptoms began, how they affect everyday activities, and any changes over time. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, allergies and relevant previous results. Ask which explanations are being considered, whether tests would change care, and what follow-up is needed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, other conditions or difficulties following a plan. Agree on realistic goals and ask what changes should prompt earlier contact.

Safety note

This article is general education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Do not start, stop or change prescribed medicines based on it. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
