Asthma: a clear plan for safer breathing

Understanding symptoms

Asthma can cause wheeze, cough, breathlessness or chest tightness, with symptoms changing over time and with triggers. Not every wheeze is asthma; diagnosis may require breathing tests and a medical history, especially when symptoms recur at night or during activity.

A care plan

Have inhaler technique checked and request a written plan covering daily treatment and worsening symptoms. Inhalers differ, so another person’s instructions may not suit yours. Discuss smoke, dust and personal triggers. Increasing reliever use or night waking deserves early review. Difficulty speaking because of breathlessness or worsening despite your rescue plan requires emergency help; follow your own plan while help is arranged.

Making informed decisions

Ask about the expected benefits and possible harms of each option, including what happens if you wait. Test results need interpretation alongside your history and examination, not in isolation. If instructions are unclear, request a plain-language explanation and repeat the plan back in your own words. Keep a copy of the agreed follow-up steps.

Preparing for a consultation

Write down when symptoms began, how they affect everyday activities, and any changes over time. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, allergies and relevant previous results. Ask which explanations are being considered, whether tests would change care, and what follow-up is needed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, other conditions or difficulties following a plan. Agree on realistic goals and ask what changes should prompt earlier contact.

Safety note

This article is general education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Do not start, stop or change prescribed medicines based on it. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
